How Holiday Drinks Differ From Party Drinks
The standard party formula — one drink per guest per hour, plus one for the first hour — comes from standing cocktail receptions where everyone holds a glass the whole time. Applied to a holiday dinner it over-buys badly, for two reasons.
- Seated meals are paced by courses. Consumption runs closer to 0.8 drinks per hour, and it skews heavily to wine — roughly 60% of everything poured.
- A real share of the table isn't drinking. Drivers, pregnant guests, people on medication, anyone sober. Counting them as drinkers inflates the alcohol and — worse — under-buys the non-alcoholic drinks they actually want.
So this calculator asks for drinkers and non-drinkers separately. Non-alcoholic quantities are then based on everyone, because drinkers alternate too.
The formulas
Drinks = drinkers × 0.8 × hours · Wine bottles = ceil(drinks × 0.60 ÷ 5)
Non-alcoholic = (adults × 0.7 + kids × 1.0) × hours
Worked example — 8 drinking, 4 not, 3 kids, 4 hours: about 26 drinks total → 4 bottles of wine, 7 beers, 1 bottle of spirits, plus 46 non-alcoholic servings, 17 cups of coffee and 23 lb of ice.
Note the rounding: 26 drinks at 60% wine is 15.4 glasses, which is 3.02 bottles — so you buy 4. Three bottles leaves you a glass short, which is the one place it's worth over-buying.

A 750 ml bottle is five 5 oz glasses. Home pours run larger — closer to four glasses a bottle — so round up if guests pour their own.
Before the Day
- Buy ice early and buy more than you think. 1.5 lb per guest, and the shops are shut on the day itself. It's the most commonly forgotten item on the list.
- Make the non-alcoholic option good. Sparkling cider in a wine glass reads as celebratory; a warm two-litre bottle of cola does not. It matters to the people who can't drink.
- Chill in advance. White wine needs 3 hours in the fridge or 30 minutes in ice water. Fridge space on a holiday is a real constraint — a cooler on the porch works.
- Coffee arrives with dessert. Plan roughly 1.4 cups per adult and start brewing before you serve pie, not after someone asks.
- Stop the bar before the end. Switching to coffee and dessert an hour before people leave is the simplest thing a host can do, and it's the responsible one.
