How to Calculate Party Ice

  1. By guests: 1 lb each indoors, 1.5 outdoors, 2 in summer heat — covering cups plus chilling. Add 50% for all-day events.
  2. By coolers: fill each about one-third with ice — 1, 2, or 3 ten-pound bags for small, standard, and large coolers.
  3. Split serving from chilling: cup ice stays in a clean cooler with a scoop; can-burying ice is not food-safe.

Ice formulas

Pounds = guests × (1 / 1.5 / 2 lb) × duration factor
Bags = ceil(pounds ÷ 10)

Worked example — 50 guests, backyard, mild day: 50 × 1.5 = 75 lb → eight 10 lb bags, with ~25 lb reserved clean for cups.

Day-of. For 100+ lb, get vendor delivery.

Separate ice for cups?
