Tent Size Calculator

Square footage by seating style — with dance floor, buffet, and bar space added — mapped to the standard sizes rental companies actually stock.

Planning sizes, not an installation plan. Your rental company determines what is safe for your ground, wind load, and local permits — tents above certain sizes often require a permit and fire inspection. Call 811 before anything is staked; tent stakes drive well past utility depth.

How to Size a Party Tent

Rental companies quote from square feet per guest by seating style, then add functional areas:

  1. Seated dinner (round tables): 12 sq ft per guest. Banquet rows squeeze to 10; seated + buffet flow prefers 13–14.
  2. Ceremony rows: 8 sq ft. Standing cocktail: 6 sq ft.
  3. Add the extras: dance floor (~4.5 sq ft × half your guests), buffets (+100 each), bars (+150 each), band stage (+200).
  4. Round up to a stock size — tents come in fixed widths (10/20/30/40 ft) and lengths in 10–15 ft jumps.

Tent formulas

Base = guests × (12 seated / 8 rows / 6 standing)
Total = base + dance floor + 100×buffets + 150×bars + stage

Worked example — 100 seated guests, dance floor, 2 buffets, 1 bar, DJ: 1,200 + 225 + 200 + 150 + 50 = 1,825 sq ft → a 40 × 60 tent (2,400) with comfortable margin, or a tight 30 × 60.

Square feet per person?

12 seated at rounds, 8 in ceremony rows, 6 standing cocktail.

How big a dance floor?

4.5 sq ft × half your guests — ~225 sq ft (15×15) per 100 guests.

Pole vs frame tent?

Pole: cheaper, needs grass, center poles inside. Frame: clear span, any surface, pricier.

What does a tent cost?

~$1–2/sq ft pole, $2–4 frame, installed — before sidewalls, lights, and flooring.

Should I size up?

If in doubt, yes — one size up is 10–20% more money and the difference between a rain plan and a disaster.
